Episode 21 of the podcast is now live! Jeremy is joined by writer and illustrator Megha Lillywhite for a discussion on Bram Stoker’s 1897 horror classic, Dracula.
The original novel is far stranger, darker, and more profound than its modern adaptations may suggest, and the titular Count is not the brooding, romantic figure of modern vampire stories. He is something far darker that lurks at the edge of our consciousness.
Surprising to many, perhaps, is that Dracula is a deeply Christian story about the reality of evil and the struggle for the human soul. Stoker’s symbolism of blood, for example, and the contrast between vampiric immortality and Christian eternal life are fascinating to unpack.
Megha’s case for reading the book today is thus: it is thrilling, the language is rich, and it draws out the sacrifice, love, and faith required to ultimately defeat Count Dracula…
