One thing that keeps coming to my mind as I listen to you, especially about Don’s grasp of reality. I think perhaps you two may be too young to have experienced sitting with an elderly person over days or weeks in which they are in the active phase of dying. Often they time travel. My mother, for iinstance in her 80s thought that she was an 18 year-old 19 year-old girl in India. She had been there then. It was only a brief conversation and then she was back to the present.
An aunt thought that she was in a grand hotel because her bedroom was so lovely and a tray of food has just been placed on her lap in bed and then she was back.. I wonder if there was a little of that in Don Quijotes time travels to the age of chivalry
